Replacing the grueling stagecoach ride, trains encouraged the growth of completely new towns

Commuting along the Peninsula, especially between San Francisco and San Jose, has always been a topic for animated discussion.

By 1850, San Jose was the place to go. To be sure, the Santa Clara Valley city was California’s 1st American capital, at least for a year, until legislators voted to abandon it for Vallejo. Difficulties encountered getting to and from San Jose prompted the change.

Regular, twice-daily service between the 2 communities began 2 days later.
